How to take it at home

  2. 02Hold the phone at eye level, or ask someone to take it.

The rules

  • Colour photo taken in the last 6 months.
  • Plain white or off-white background.
  • Full face facing the camera, neutral expression, both eyes open.
  • No eyeglasses (except for documented medical reasons).
  • No hat or head covering unless worn daily for religious reasons, with the full face visible.
  • No headphones or wireless devices. No uniforms.
  • Digital file: square JPEG, 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels, 240 KB or less, compressed no more than 20:1, colour (sRGB).

Good to know

  • Head height is measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair: 25–35 mm on the print, 50–69% of the file's height.
  • The Diversity Visa entry needs exactly 600 × 600 pixels; VisaSize makes 600 × 600.
  • The file must also be compressed no more than 20:1. For 600 × 600 pixels that means at least about 54 KB, so VisaSize keeps the file between 54 and 240 KB.
  • The main photo page gives the head height as "22 mm and 35 mm"; the composition template says 25–35 mm (1 inch is 25.4 mm). VisaSize uses 25–35 mm, which meets both.
