The rules

  • At DFA the passport photo is taken at your appointment: do not bring one.
  • For the DFA capture: no glasses or coloured contact lenses, no earrings or large jewellery, hair accessories off, neutral expression, ears and forehead visible.
  • Wear a collared top or high-neckline shirt; avoid sleeveless tops.
  • Travel Document: four identical 2 × 2 inch colour photos with a plain white background, taken in the last 6 months, printed on photo paper, without eyeglasses, in proper attire.

Good to know

  • A printed photo is needed only for an emergency Travel Document. Each consulate sets its own rules; the 2 × 2 inch white-background rule is from the consulates in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.
  • DFA publishes no size or background for the passport capture, only how to prepare.
  • No head size is published for the Travel Document photo; VisaSize keeps the head at about 60% of the photo.
